Books and Writing
…is where Headlong sits today. This was a fun interview, especially when I got to express, at last, my love for scraps.
How did Twilight come up? It’s everywhere, dammit. I was listening to it on CD at the same time I was re-reading The Cipher. It was like having my head dunked under water (Twilight) and then being let up for some literary air. (The Cipher) Not that it was bad, but it wasn’t anything all that great either. I’d love to read a vampire novel by you. It’d have more in the first five pages then all four Twilight books put together.
Could there be a more arresting young vampire than Claudia, Anne Rice’s doomed, cruel six-year-old from INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE? The sober amorality of the child, the trapped, frustrated, vengeful sensibility of an adult…she’s my favorite. Now THAT was making it new.
Going back to making fun of what we love, here’s my take on the story of Claudia… http://www.comicspace.com/christophermoonlight/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=10918 I loved the part when she told her “fathers” that she wanted a coffin of her own. It was so funny, and so lost on most kids reading it.
